Nearly 24 million people are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction in the United States today. This is approximately 7 percent of our country’s entire population.
Still, just 11 percent of those 24 million individuals will actually seek drug addiction treatment. And to make matters even worse, the relapse rates for those who complete drug and alcohol rehab programs is 40 to 50 percent.
All of these statistics may sound depressing, however, there is hope for drug addiction if this is something that you or a loved one is struggling with.
What’s important to remember is that outpatient drug rehab is the absolute best route to take if you have an addiction problem.
Why Outpatient Treatment?
Generally speaking, there are two types of drug addiction treatment: inpatient treatment and outpatient treatment.
Inpatient treatment requires that the individual check in to a treatment facility and stay there completely until the end of their treatment program. This means moving their entire life to a treatment facility for sometimes up to three or four months, depending on the severity of their addiction. It means that the individual cannot work, go to school, or take care of their family if need be.
On the other hand, outpatient treatment allows the individual to attend drug rehab while continuing their normal life. It may require that the individual cut back on time at work or at home, but in general, the individual is able to continue living a normal life while they get help for their addiction.
This means that outpatient drug treatment is less expensive, less burdensome, and more realistic. This latter point means that outpatient treatment allows the individual who is struggling with addiction to see what it’s like to stay sober while living “in the real world” and at home.
Those who go into inpatient treatment are living in a pseudo-fantasy world where everything is taken care of for them, and drugs and alcohol are not available, so there are no temptations. Sadly, the world is not like this. Instead, it is full of temptations, hardships, and negative influences. It’s important to understand how to navigate these in order to stay sober and not relapse.
